{"id":48875,"date":"2023-09-28T10:15:44","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T08:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/actualidad_home\/world-maritime-day-ensuring-the-sustainable-use-of-the-ocean-to-boost-the-blue-economy\/"},"modified":"2023-09-28T11:11:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T09:11:54","slug":"world-maritime-day-ensuring-the-sustainable-use-of-the-ocean-to-boost-the-blue-economy","status":"publish","type":"actualidad_home","link":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/actualidad_home\/world-maritime-day-ensuring-the-sustainable-use-of-the-ocean-to-boost-the-blue-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"World Maritime Day: ensuring the sustainable use of the ocean to boost the blue economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Maritime Day<\/strong>, promoted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Maritime Organization (IMO)<\/a>, takes place every year on the fourth Thursday of September, highlighting the <strong>sustainable use of the ocean<\/strong> and the need to establish standards for <strong>safety, security and environmental performance in international shipping<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/es\/About\/Events\/Pages\/World-Maritime-theme-2023.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 marks the 50th anniversary<\/a> of the adoption of the MARPOL Convention. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/es\/About\/Conventions\/Pages\/International-Convention-for-the-Prevention-of-Pollution-from-Ships-(MARPOL).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n  <strong>MARPOL Convention<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>the main international treaty dedicated to preventing and <strong>minimizing pollution of the marine environment from ships<\/strong>, whether operational or accidental. Among other measures, it <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcdn.imo.org\/localresources\/en\/About\/Events\/Documents\/WMD%20theme%202023%20-%20SG%20message\/LEMA%20MARI%CC%81TIMO%20MUNDIAL%20DE%202023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibits the discharge of plastic garbage into the sea and the disposal of operational waste<\/a>, such as garbage and sewage.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the shipping industry accounts for <strong>80% of the world&#8217;s trade volume<\/strong> and contributes to the transportation of millions of people around the globe. It is therefore also one of the major drivers of the <strong>tourism sector<\/strong>, as almost one third of all tourism activity in Europe takes place in coastal regions.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, maritime transport is one of the fundamental pillars of the <strong>blue economy<\/strong>, a sector that encompasses all activities related to the sea, with the <strong>ocean as the main engine of growth and innovation<\/strong> to achieve <strong>sustainable economic development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The blue economy generates <strong>$2.5 trillion<\/strong> a year in <strong>global wealth<\/strong>, which, in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is equivalent to the seventh largest economy on the planet. Activities such as <strong>sustainable fishing<\/strong> and <strong>aquaculture<\/strong> employ more than 350 million people globally and, in Europe alone, create some <strong>4.5 million jobs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Spain provides an ideal scenario for the development of the blue economy with almost 8,000 square kilometers of coastline. <strong>It accounts for 5% of employment<\/strong> in our country and is capable of generating 945,000 jobs. In addition, <strong>it accounts for 3% of gross value added<\/strong> (GVA), amounting to 32.7 billion euros per year. This makes it the <strong>leader in this economic sector in Europe<\/strong>, ahead of other neighboring countries such as France (1.4% of employment and 1% of GVA), Italy (2.3% and 1.5%, respectively) and the United Kingdom (3.2% and 1%).<\/p>\n<p>However, considering that more than 3 billion people around the world depend on the  <strong>marine and coastal biodiversity<\/strong>  for their own livelihoods, the profitability of these activities makes it necessary to highlight the need for an ocean that enjoys a  <strong>good health<\/strong>  to ensure its future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":48873,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"palabras_clave":[],"class_list":["post-48875","actualidad_home","type-actualidad_home","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
