On Saturday, November 20, the director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Ana Leiva, attended the presentation of the results of the project “A multidisciplinary approach in the rehabilitation of wildlife”, which has been carried out this year by the Brinzal Nocturnal Raptor Recovery Center in Madrid.<\/p>\n
After the presentation, Ana Leiva has released two specimens of tawny owl (Strix aluco) in the surroundings of the Regional Park of the Upper Manzanares Basin, where the environmental education center where the meeting has been held is located. The pair of birds of prey released has been rehabilitated by Brinzal within the framework of this project. <\/p>\n
The initiative, carried out during this year, has consisted of developing innovations, improvements and a complete review of all aspects involved in the recovery of wildlife, in order to optimize the results. To this end, everything from veterinary and nutritional aspects to rehabilitation protocols and anti-predation training, among others, have been taken into account. The result is reflected in the more than 400 specimens treated, belonging to seven species of nocturnal birds of prey, two of nightjars and one of harriers. <\/p>\n
Through this project, techniques such as physiotherapy or acupuncture have been established for the treatment of certain pathologies in birds. The application of laser therapy for tissue regeneration and acupuncture has also been incorporated, in case of nerve alterations due to trauma. Two other aspects improved have been the optimisation of diets and the minimisation of the stress that captivity and proximity to humans pose for wild birds. Likewise, disciplines such as behavioral ecology or the learning theories of behavioral psychology have been used to achieve appropriate behaviors, especially in the case of young individuals. <\/p>\n
