The Minister of the Environment, Cristina Narbona, has informed the Council of Ministers of the situation of Spain with regard to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which in 2004 were 47.9% higher than in 1990, that is, 32.9% above the target established in the Kyoto Protocol for the period 2008-2012. It should be stressed that the deadline for the fulfilment of Spain’s commitments ends at the end of 2012. <\/p>\n

On 15 April, Spain presented the National Inventory for 2004, which the Ministry of the Environment prepares in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Spain signed in 1992. These guidelines and procedures seek to ensure that inventories from different countries are comparable, accurate, and transparent. The inventory for 2005 will not be ready until the end of this year and must be submitted to the United Nations by 15 April 2007. <\/p>\n
