{"id":97858051,"date":"2015-08-31T09:49:28","date_gmt":"2015-08-31T07:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/actualidad_home\/a-program-allows-the-identification-and-recognition-of-individual-sea-turtles\/"},"modified":"2015-08-31T09:49:28","modified_gmt":"2015-08-31T07:49:28","slug":"a-program-allows-the-identification-and-recognition-of-individual-sea-turtles","status":"publish","type":"actualidad_home","link":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/actualidad_home\/a-program-allows-the-identification-and-recognition-of-individual-sea-turtles\/","title":{"rendered":"A program allows the identification and recognition of individual sea turtles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pitmar.net\/index.php\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pitmar project<\/a><\/strong>, developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neotropico.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Neotropic Foundation<\/strong><\/a> with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, has made it possible to develop a sea turtle recognition system through the photoidentification of specimens. The initiative, launched in the waters of the Canary archipelago, was born with the aim of contributing to the <strong>protection, conservation and research on sea turtles <\/strong>through the implementation of an advanced identification algorithm and a database for the registration and monitoring of sea turtle specimens.<\/p>\n<p> Thanks to the project, <strong>the Pitmar programme <\/strong>is available through an online platform of international scope, which is free to use. In addition, <strong>within the framework of the project, a database has been designed in which almost 2,900 specimens of sea turtles are available<\/strong>. The program incorporates 700 individual files of photo-identified turtles.<\/p>\n<p> As part of the initiative, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neotropico.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Neotropic Foundation<\/a><\/strong> <strong>has returned 41 specimens of turtles to marine waters<\/strong>, activities in which students, volunteers, diving clubs, sports entities and neighborhood associations, among other groups, have participated.<\/p>\n<p> Currently, the <strong>Pitmar program<\/strong> has users from different countries on five continents.
