Researchers from different parts of Spain have begun the process of updating the standard list of marine species, an action within the framework of the LIFE INTEMARES project.
\n<\/p>\n

Researchers from various parts of Spain have begun the process of updating the standard list of marine species, one of the basic pillars of information on the biodiversity of our seas, which already has more than 11,000 species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This action, framed in the LIFE INTEMARES<\/a> project, will expand the scientific information and databases available to improve the management of species and habitats, as well as optimize the mechanisms for the exchange of information between administrations and scientific organizations.<\/p>\n

The scientists, from universities and research centres, have today shared, at the headquarters of the Biodiversity Foundation, the latest studies and work carried out, with the aim of updating the standard list that was published in 2017 with new species present in our seas. It is expected that this inventory can be updated in 2020, after the publication of a scientific article that includes the conclusions of the work and recommendations for marine environment management professionals. <\/p>\n

Science, a cornerstone for management<\/strong><\/p>\n

The LIFE INTEMARES project aims to achieve an effective and coherent management of our marine Natura 2000 Network. To this end, it has science and participation as the backbone of the project, promoting spaces for exchange and collaborative work between scientists and competent administrations. <\/p>\n

The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition coordinates LIFE INTEMARES and the General Directorate of Sustainability of the Coast and the Sea of the same ministry, the IEO, the Spanish Fisheries Confederation, SEO\/BirdLife and WWF-Spain participate as partners. It has the financial contribution of the European Union’s LIFE programme, among other sources of funding. <\/p>\n
