The ‘National Strategy for Green Infrastructure and Ecological Connectivity and Restoration’ aims to stop the fragmentation of habitats and restore damaged biodiversity in Spain.

The Council of Ministers, at the request of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, approves the ‘National Strategy for Green Infrastructure and Ecological Connectivity and Restoration’<\/a>, which aims to curb the fragmentation of habitats and restore damaged biodiversity in Spain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Strategy was created with the aim of contributing to the conservation of the elements of the territory that make up the green infrastructure <\/strong>of the Spanish territory, both terrestrial and marine, providing a solution to the fragmentation of the habitats of the Spanish territory<\/strong>. In addition, it is intended to ensure ecological connectivity and the functionality of ecosystems<\/strong>, as well as mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change. Another objective is the defragmentation of strategic areas for connectivity and the restoration of degraded ecosystems. <\/p>\n

The plan addresses one of the fundamental problems for nature conservation in Spain<\/strong>: the deterioration of ecosystems<\/strong> and their services, as well as their fragmentation<\/strong>, the result of 50 years of alterations due to development that has often been unsustainable. For this reason, the text seeks to restore damaged ecosystems and consolidate a network of fully functional and connected natural and semi-natural terrestrial and marine areas in Spain by 2050. <\/p>\n

The Strategy is the strategic planning document that regulates the implementation and development of Green Infrastructure in Spain<\/strong>, establishing a harmonised administrative and technical framework for the whole of Spanish territory, also including maritime waters under national sovereignty or jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
