{"id":97875471,"date":"2026-05-21T09:00:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T07:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/actualidad_home\/the-natura-2000-network-a-strategic-pillar-against-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T09:00:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T07:00:29","slug":"the-natura-2000-network-a-strategic-pillar-against-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss","status":"publish","type":"actualidad_home","link":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/actualidad_home\/the-natura-2000-network-a-strategic-pillar-against-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"The Natura 2000 Network, a strategic pillar against climate change and biodiversity loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every <strong>May 21<\/strong> , the <strong>European Day of the Natura 2000 Network<\/strong> is celebrated, a date promoted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/natura-2000\/natura-2000-day_en?prefLang=es\">European Commission<\/a> in 2017 to make visible the importance of this ecological network and strengthen social involvement in the conservation and restoration of nature. This ecological instrument <strong>connects some of Europe&#8217;s most valuable ecosystems<\/strong> and plays an increasingly important role in the face of challenges such as climate change, droughts, forest fires or ecosystem degradation. <\/p>\n<p>The Natura 2000 Network integrates more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/maps-and-charts\/natura-2000-barometer-dashboards\"><strong>27,000 protected areas<\/strong><\/a>, making it the largest network of protected areas in the world. It also covers about a <strong>fifth of the European<\/strong> Union&#8217;s land area and <strong>more than 10% of its seas<\/strong>, including ecosystems essential for the conservation of around <strong>1,200 rare and threatened species<\/strong> and <strong>230 <\/strong><strong> types of habitats of Community interest<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>For more than three decades, the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/birds-directive_en\">Birds Directive<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/habitats-directive_en\">Habitats Directive<\/a> have provided the framework for managing these territories, integrating biodiversity conservation, traditional uses and sustainable economic activity. The benefits associated with these ecosystems generate between <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/natura-2000_en?prefLang=es\"><strong>200,000 and 300,000 million euros<\/strong><\/a> per year and support around <strong>4.4 million jobs<\/strong>, according to data from the European Commission. <\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miteco.gob.es\/content\/dam\/miteco\/es\/biodiversidad\/temas\/espacios-protegidos\/rn2k\/boletines\/boletinRN2000_n10.pdf\">Spain<\/a>, the Natura 2000 Network covers more than <strong>27.4% of the earth&#8217;s surface <\/strong>and has <strong>more than 1,860 protected areas<\/strong>. Currently, it integrates nearly <strong>1,500 Sites of Community Importance (SCI),<\/strong> covering a total area <strong>of more than 263,000 km\u00b2<\/strong>, of which around 119,000 km\u00b2 correspond to the terrestrial environment and more than 144,000 km\u00b2 to the marine environment. There are also some <strong>660 Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs),<\/strong> some shared with SCI areas, which together occupy more than <strong>164,000 km\u00b2.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>At the end of last year, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) approved the<a href=\"https:\/\/intemares.es\/2025\/10\/07\/se-amplia-la-red-natura-2000-con-nuevos-espacios-que-elevan-al-225-la-superficie-marina-protegida\/\"> incorporation of new marine protected areas<\/a> into the Natura 2000 Network, with <strong>five new SCIs<\/strong> and <strong>a new SPA<\/strong>. These designations have made it possible to expand the <strong>marine<\/strong> <strong>protected area by nearly 1.7 million hectares<\/strong> to <strong>22.5% of Spanish waters<\/strong>, moving towards the target of 30% by 2030. The identification of a large part of these sites has been based on the scientific proposal for the adaptation of the marine Natura 2000 Network in Spain, prepared within the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intemares.es\/\"><strong>LIFE INTEMARES<\/strong><\/a> project, coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation.  <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>RESTORATION, CONSERVATION AND GREEN EMPLOYMENT IN THE NATURA 2000 NETWORK<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The MITECO <strong>Biodiversity Foundation<\/strong> promotes numerous actions linked to the conservation, restoration and management <strong>of terrestrial and marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network<\/strong>. These initiatives reinforce its role as a key tool to strengthen territorial resilience, ecological connectivity and biodiversity conservation. <\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, the Foundation coordinates or participates as a partner in <strong>various LIFE projects<\/strong> whose actions take place in areas of the <strong>Natura 2000 Network.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the most relevant initiatives is <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/notas_de_prensa_mite\/spain-will-execute-the-largest-project-in-the-history-of-the-life-funds-in-europe\/\"><strong>LIFE Wetlands<\/strong><\/a>, the largest LIFE project approved to date by the European Union. This initiative will mobilise more than <strong>270 million euros<\/strong> over the next decade to carry out <strong>284 restoration actions <\/strong>on more than <strong>26,000 hectares<\/strong> and <strong>107 Natura 2000 sites<\/strong>, through hydrological and ecological restoration actions and to improve the conservation status of habitats and species of community interest. <\/p>\n<p>Ecological restoration and the <strong>recovery of endangered species<\/strong> are another of the priority lines. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerceta-pardilla.es\/\"><strong>LIFE Marbled Teal<\/strong><\/a> project, completed last March, contributed to <strong>a fourfold increase in the breeding population<\/strong> of this critically endangered species. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.life-ecorest.es\/\"><strong>LIFE ECOREST<\/strong><\/a> is working on the restoration of <strong>30,000 hectares of deep marine habitats<\/strong> off the coast of Catalonia and <a href=\"https:\/\/life-custodia.es\/\"><strong>LIFE Stewardship<\/strong><\/a> is strengthening land stewardship through voluntary conservation agreements and <strong>collaborative governance models in Natura 2000 areas<\/strong>. In the marine field, initiatives such as <strong>LIFE INTEMARES,<\/strong> which promotes effective management of the marine environment and has made it possible to <strong>identify 104 marine areas <\/strong>of high ecological value, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lifeamarnatura2000.eu\/es\/\"><strong>LIFE A-MAR NATURA 2000<\/strong><\/a>, which has developed <strong>dissemination and citizen science<\/strong> actions, have contributed to strengthening knowledge, management and awareness of marine protected areas.   <\/p>\n<p>Likewise, within the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/otras_convocatorias\/call-for-support-for-projects-of-the-life-programme-and-the-digitalisation-of-knowledge-of-natural-heritage\/\">call for subsidies to support <strong>projects of the LIFE programme and the digitalisation of knowledge<\/strong> of natural heritage<\/a>, initiatives aimed at the recovery of vulnerable ecosystems and species linked <strong>to Natura 2000 areas<\/strong> stand out. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/life\/wetland-management-and-restoration-to-halt-the-decline-of-aquatic-warbler-populations-life-awom\/\"><strong>LIFE AWOM,<\/strong><\/a> which focuses on the restoration of key wetlands for the <strong>conservation of aquatic warbler<\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/life\/restoration-of-high-mountain-lakes-in-the-pyrenees-coordination-and-implementation-of-actions-to-eradicate-introduced-fish-restaurapir_sor\/\"><strong>RESTAURAPIR_SOR<\/strong><\/a>, which works on the recovery of high mountain lakes in <strong>the Catalan Pyrenees<\/strong> through the <strong>restoration of aquatic habitats<\/strong> of community interest. <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), green connectivity and climate adaptation are also growing priorities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/proyecto_feder\/analysis-and-design-of-ecological-restoration-corridors-for-the-adaptation-to-climate-change-of-forest-habitats-in-castilla-y-leon-confor-ccad\/\"><strong>CONFOR-CCAD<\/strong><\/a> project analyses the connectivity of <strong>19 protected forest habitats in Castilla y Le\u00f3n<\/strong> to design ecological corridors and strengthen the resilience of ecosystems to climate change. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/proyecto_feder\/ecological-reactivation-of-the-local-green-infrastructure-of-andujar-urban-rural-natural-and-river-landscape-erdf-ivla-andujar\/\">urban green infrastructure initiatives such as the <strong>one developed in And\u00fajar<\/strong><\/a> favour the connection between urban, rural and river spaces in a municipality where <strong>75% of the territory is part of the Natura 2000 Network<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>Within the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.programapleamar.es\/\"><strong>Pleamar Programme<\/strong><\/a>, co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA), the Biodiversity Foundation promotes projects aimed at <strong>restoring the marine environment<\/strong> and improving the management of marine Natura 2000 sites. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.programapleamar.es\/proyectos\/maraves-ii-aves-y-pescadores-aliados-por-un-mar-de-biodiversidad\"><strong>MARAVES II,<\/strong><\/a> which focuses on <strong>reducing seabird bycatch<\/strong> <strong><\/strong> through collaboration with the fishing sector, <strong>and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.programapleamar.es\/proyectos\/marvel-red-regional-integrada-de-zonas-marinas-de-alto-valor-ecologico-en-la-demarcacion\"><strong>MARVEL,<\/strong><\/a> which is working on the development of a regional network <strong>of marine areas of high ecological value<\/strong> in the Mediterranean. <\/p>\n<p>The social and economic dimension of these territories is also key. Through the <a href=\"https:\/\/empleaverde.es\/\"><strong>Empleaverde+ Programme<\/strong><\/a>, co-financed by the European Social Fund+, the Foundation supports initiatives linked to <strong>green employment,<\/strong> ecological restoration and sustainable ecotourism in protected areas. Projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/programa_empleaverde\/emprende-ecoturismo-en-espana-eee\/\"><strong>Emprende Ecoturismo in Spain<\/strong><\/a> promote new opportunities linked to <strong>biodiversity conservation<\/strong> and rural socio-economic development.  <\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Natura 2000 Network continues to consolidate itself as one of the <strong>main instruments for the conservation<\/strong> of species and habitats in Europe.
