The LIFE+ Desmania project for the conservation of the Iberian desman, approved by the European Commission in 2012, involves the collaboration of eight national and regional entities, such as the autonomous communities of Extremadura and Castilla y Le\u00f3n. The Iberian desman is a small semi-aquatic insectivorous mammal that is distributed throughout the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula. The populations of this river insectivore have experienced a significant decline and, in some autonomous communities, it is in danger of extinction. <\/p>\n
The populations of the Central System have suffered a serious decline in recent decades, with the confirmation of local extinctions, a fact that justified the inclusion of these populations in the category of endangered within the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species.<\/p>\n
The main threats have to do with causes that lead to the degradation and fragmentation of their habitat, and which are mainly of anthropic origin, such as water pollution, illegal or uncontrolled withdrawals, degradation of riparian forests, the presence or creation of artificial barriers and the expansion of the American mink.<\/p>\n
With the aim of contributing to its conservation, the project LIFE11\/NAT\/ES\/691 Conservation and recovery programme for Galemys pyrenaicus and its habitat in Castilla y Le\u00f3n and Extremadura (LIFE+ Desmania) has been launched.<\/p>\n
The project, 50% co-financed by the European Commission within the framework of the LIFE+ programme, is being carried out between 2012 and 2016 in Natura 2000 Network areas in the provinces of Le\u00f3n, Zamora, Salamanca and C\u00e1ceres. It is coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation and has as partners the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the Regional Government of Castilla y Le\u00f3n, the Regional Government of Extremadura, the Cesefor Foundation, the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y Le\u00f3n, SOMACYL and Tragsatec.
