The Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Isabel Garc\u00eda Tejerina, stresses that the protection of the environment is a responsibility to which no one is oblivious. <\/p>\n
The Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Isabel Garc\u00eda Tejerina, has assured that “the environment belongs to everyone, and its protection is a responsibility to which no one is oblivious”. He also stated that “the transition to more sustainable growth involves enormous challenges, but also great opportunities, economic and social, that we must take advantage of”.<\/p>\n
Isabel Garc\u00eda Tejerina inaugurated this morning, at the headquarters of the Ministry, the Conference “The role of Foundations in the conservation of natural capital”. At this event, the minister was accompanied by the President of the Spanish Association of Foundations; the Secretary of State for the Environment, Federico Ramos, senior officials of the Ministry and representatives of foundations. <\/p>\n
In his speech, Garc\u00eda Tejerina assured that working in favour of the protection of the environment is also contributing to the sustainable development of economic activities that take place in the natural environment. In this sense, the minister assured that “public administrations have the obligation to protect nature, and we must do so based on the indispensable collective solidarity”. <\/p>\n
Precisely, the objective of today’s conference is to give relevance to this collective support provided by foundations. It is, he said, “to share experiences and knowledge around our common interest in improving the environment”. <\/p>\n
TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT MODEL<\/p>\n
In this context, Garc\u00eda Tejerina stressed the need to move towards a more sustainable development model, “based on the most rational and efficient use of natural resources”. A model, he added, “capable of recognising the scarcity of resources and preserving them, at the service of growth and social welfare”. <\/p>\n
To this end, Garc\u00eda Tejerina believes that foundations are called upon to play an important role, as they have extensive experience in maximising the social utility of their activities.<\/p>\n
To illustrate the social and economic importance of foundations in Spain, Garc\u00eda Tejerina commented that, according to the Second Report on the Foundation Sector in Spain, of June 2014, there are more than 29 million final and direct beneficiaries of the activities of the 14,000 organizations registered in our country.<\/p>\n
He also commented that the foundations mobilize more than 108,000 volunteers annually, people who dedicate time and effort to carry out work of general interest without remuneration, to which must be added some 70,000 employers who do not receive remuneration.<\/p>\n
Specifically, the minister pointed out that about 10% of foundations have as their main purpose the defense of the environment. Of these, only the 16 that make up the Association of Foundations for the Conservation of Nature mobilise more than 82,000 people, of which almost 6,000 are volunteers. <\/p>\n
COLLABORATION WITH FOUNDATIONS<\/p>\n
As he highlighted, “these foundations actively collaborate with public administrations, which allows us to achieve results that, alone, would not be easy to achieve”.<\/p>\n
In addition to the work carried out by the Ministry with foundations, Garc\u00eda Tejerina referred to the promotion of various projects “to involve our companies in the task of achieving a low-carbon economy”.<\/p>\n
In this regard, the minister expressed her Department’s willingness to “strengthen this collaboration, promoting our dialogue with foundations that work in defence of the environment”. To this end, the minister has been convinced of the importance of “intensifying our collaboration in the field of research, education and environmental communication”. <\/p>\n
In this sense, Garc\u00eda Tejerina understands that “decisions can only be correct if they are made on the basis of rigorous knowledge”. At the same time, he pointed out that environmental education is key to changing behaviour in the medium and long term. “And the informative and awareness-raising work that you carry out is also very relevant,” he added. <\/p>\n
In short, “we want to work, side by side, with civil society”, said the minister, who recalled how since the beginning of this Legislature the Ministry has had its doors open, “and we want to continue strengthening our relationship with citizens to build a more sustainable development model based on the protection of our natural environment”.
