Implementing this regulation successfully requires knowing what happens with discarding. Acoustic telemetry monitoring of discarded specimens is a useful tool that provides detailed information in the natural environment to understand changes in behavior and infer mortalities after discarding.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Artisanal fisheries are considered low-impact fisheries with lower levels of discards than the industrial fleet, but they are not exempt from compliance with this regulation. The TAC project, corresponding to the 2018 call of the Pleamar Programme, made available an acoustic monitoring network and a method for estimating mortality by telemetry to assess the survival of discards from the Galician artisanal fleet in the environment of a marine protected area. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The general objective of DESTAC is to continue the actions carried out in the previous call for the estimation of the survival of discards from the artisanal fleet in this protected environment, as well as the reduction of the impact of discarding. To this end, the survival rate of target species of the artisanal fleet subject to quota and, therefore, affected by European regulations, and of species not subject to quota, but with a legal minimum size, below which they are mandatorily discarded, will be evaluated. The factors related to the fishing and handling process and the impact on the recovery and survival of discards will be identified and technical improvements will be proposed to increase the survival of discards in artisanal fisheries.
