DESMARES works to make artisanal fishing in the western Mediterranean compatible with the conservation of the shag as a species currently classified as vulnerable and which at the same time is a bioindicator of the fish stock.<\/p>\n

The project has made it possible to know the dynamics of the fish stock on the coast and to study the population of the shag cormorant, both from a temporal and spatial point of view, especially in protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network. In this sense, cooperation with the artisanal fishing sector is essential in a more sustainable fishery since it helps the recovery of the shag as a bioindicator. Making artisanal fishing compatible and at the same time emphasizing the conservation of seabirds is a step forward for the sustainability of fishing. <\/p>\n

This project has also studied the fishery including the analysis of the environmental impacts of fishing (mainly the state of the stock, the impact on sensitive habitats and by-catches) and has been carried out in the broader context of an adaptive process of joint management to respond to the requirements of an ecosystem approach to fisheries. For this, GPS devices have been installed in different artisanal fishing boats that use trammel nets and gillnets. <\/p>\n

In addition, the biology and ecology of the shag has been studied, including the analysis of the diet from the identification of the otoliths of the fish ingested and regurgitated in pellet forms. In addition, feather samples have been collected to determine the diet by isotope analysis. <\/p>\n

Likewise, in order to know the spatiotemporal distribution of the shag as a bioindicator predator of the fish stock, breeding pairs from the Costa Brava, the Balearic Islands and Murcia have been censused, especially those established in the Natura 2000 Network. These censuses have been complemented with the individual marking of chicks using remote reading rings and flying specimens using GPS-GSM transmitters. <\/p>\n

Finally, all the actors involved in these spaces have been brought together in a transversal way, from those responsible for the administrations and those responsible for the Natura 2000 Network, through the fishermen’s guilds and also the scientific community.<\/p>\n
