\n Description<\/strong>\n <\/p>\n

Currently, the fishing gear used in the Mediterranean and in Europe in general is based on non-biodegradable plastic materials, mainly from the polyethylene (PE) and polyamide (PA) families. These materials are persistent in the marine environment and generate two main problems: i) in the short term, when the nets are lost or abandoned, they continue to fish (“ghost fishing”) negatively affecting vulnerable species or protected habitats, and ii) their slow degradation contributes in the medium to long term to the problem of plastic pollution in the marine environment. EU Directive 2019\/904 of the European Parliament and of the Council aims to reduce the impact of certain plastics in the aquatic environment and applies to fishing gear containing plastic, which is currently entirely plastic (Articles 2 and 3). <\/p>\n

The effect of a technical solution to the problem of fishing discards and ghost fishing in coastal ecosystems whose fisheries are exploited by means of net gear, such as trammel nets, will be assessed. The technical solution is based on the use of biosustainable plastic material (PBSAT material, under patent, developed by the company S-ENPOL (SAMSUNG group) of South Korea), in commercial trammel nets in fishing grounds in the autonomous communities of Murcia, Valencia and Catalonia. The project will carry out a socio-economic impact assessment, calculating fishing efficiency and selectivity, adoption cost and benefits. In addition, the project will carry out awareness-raising and communication activities with the fishing sector and other actors in the areas of project implementation. <\/p>\n
