Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project seeks to develop a module to build and verify the traceability of waste that reaches beaches and\/or other specific coastal areas. Waste is any solid element, including petroleum, whose dispersion on the sea surface can be modelled. <\/p>\n

This will provide information that will be used to complement the work currently being done by specialist teams to collect on-site statistics and carry out clean-up work. These campaigns are regularly organised by Spanish public bodies, including the Ministry of Ecological Transition, to comply with specific European regulations, such as OSPAR. <\/p>\n

The main background of this project is the project Litterdrone: Development and exploitation of innovative tools for remote marine litter control and management through UAVs, <\/em>funded by the European Community within the BlueLabs program and developed by a consortium of which the University of Vigo was a main member. In this way, new methodologies will be developed to prepare reports on the amount, type and origin of marine litter found on beaches, using drones and image analysis instead of manual sampling on foot. <\/p>\n

The project, therefore, will be responsible for collecting data on beach waste, in addition to modelling marine currents to and from the areas of interest, creating a model that will make a prediction about the possible journey of this waste when it comes from the sea or is incorporated into it. Based on these predictions, a semi-automatic processing of satellite images of the possible origin\/destination areas will be carried out. In addition, for the areas of origin, the existence of structures of human origin, such as coastal constructions or boats, will be studied. <\/p>\n

In addition, improvements will be made to the processes of Litterdrone’s current software, taking advantage of the new flights and data obtained, and the commercial potential of the technology developed in the rest of the project will be studied.<\/p>\n
