Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, an identification and an extensive bibliographic review of the latest work carried out in the field will be carried out to learn about the latest advances, which will provide the starting point for the rest of the research, both for the planning of the sampling of urchins for repopulation, and for the optimization of the hedgehog cultivation phases from breeding and the design of new somatic and gonadal fattening diets.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, pilot tests will be designed and implemented for the repopulation of the sea urchin P. lividus<\/em>: Innovative small-scale experiences will be designed, which will allow us to determine both the minimum marking size of the juveniles and the most appropriate restocking methodology, which will later be applied on a larger scale. A study will be prepared for the identification of the area to be repopulated, based on data previously collected by the Cangas Fishermen’s Association, which will include the composition of species, as well as the biological interactions between them. Subsequently, individuals of different sizes from the natural environment will be sampled and marked. In addition, a pilot test of small-scale repopulation will be carried out by housing the tagged individuals in marine farming structures that will allow the monitoring of the urchins in the repopulated area through periodic immersions to check the state of the released juveniles and the methodology of repopulation and study of the impact of the new individuals on the environment will be improved. <\/p>\n

Next, a series of management protocols will be defined for the improvement of the breeding phase of P. lividus<\/em>: larval culture and fixation-metamorphosis. The larval culture will be optimized to improve growth and survival rates and the parameters will be standardized in the fixation-metamorphosis phase. The manufacture and testing of experimental feed will be carried out and advice and transfer of good practices will be carried out. <\/p>\n

In the project, juvenile specimens will be massively produced once the cultivation stages have been optimized, then the juveniles will be marked with the new marking methods determined and released in the established areas. Finally, the data collected during tracking and capture will be analyzed. In addition, a biobank of various species of sea urchin will be created as a tool for the conservation of the biodiversity of native species of sea urchin, in collaboration with the Atlantic Islands National Park. Cryopreservation protocols will be developed for the preservation of biological and reproductive material of different species of sea urchin (Sphaerechinus granularis, Paracentrotus lividus and Echinocardium cordatum). <\/em>For a greater dissemination of the project, actions will be carried out focused on the communication and dissemination of the project aimed at both a general public and a specialized public. <\/p>\n
