Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abandoned or Lost Fishing Gear (PPP) has important effects on marine species and communities, as well as social impacts on the uses and management of the territory. One of them is the effect known as “ghost fishing”, which can influence not only fish species but also birds and large vertebrates, many of them protected by various state and European regulations. They can also have a significant impact on benthic species and communities, especially on coralligenous rock communities in the Mediterranean Sea. This effect is due to physical erosion that can uproot sessile species or cause a suffocation effect of benthic communities due to the covering of the bottom by abandoned nets and the accumulation of sediment. In addition, PPPs represent a source of pollution and introduction of synthetic material into the food web, since the materials that compose them, including plastics, lead and other toxic metals, slowly degrade into small fractions (microplastics) that can be ingested or filtered by various organisms. Another considerable effect is the risk they pose to the safety of navigation or water activities, in addition to constituting a visual impact such as underwater debris. <\/p>\n

In this sense, at present, there is no detailed estimate of the number of PPAs that may be present on the Mediterranean rocky bottoms, nor of the number of fishing gear that are lost annually. In addition, there is no documented estimate of the effects that the various types of PPPs (nets, threads, pots, etc.) cause on benthic species and communities. <\/p>\n

In this project, an important effort will be made to document and raise awareness, especially among the different groups and institutions that interact with the marine environment: the fishing sector, divers and diving centres, sailors and yacht clubs and environmental associations.<\/p>\n

To this end, a base document will be prepared that includes all the existing information and documentation on this problem. In addition, an action protocol will be designed with recommendations to correctly detect and document the location, characteristics and effects on the bottoms of the PPPs detected, as well as recommendations for their extraction, prioritising the safety and preservation of the affected species and habitats. <\/p>\n
