{"id":97861958,"date":"2022-03-04T14:47:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T13:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/programa_pleamar\/costtera-underwater-behavior-of-tursiops-truncatus-in-trawl-nets-in-northern-catalonia\/"},"modified":"2022-03-04T14:47:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T13:47:00","slug":"costtera-underwater-behavior-of-tursiops-truncatus-in-trawl-nets-in-northern-catalonia","status":"publish","type":"programa_pleamar","link":"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/programa_pleamar\/costtera-underwater-behavior-of-tursiops-truncatus-in-trawl-nets-in-northern-catalonia\/","title":{"rendered":"COSTtERA: Underwater Behavior of Tursiops truncatus in Trawl Nets in Northern Catalonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Description<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The COSTtERA project will be carried out in the north of Catalonia, in the waters of Girona, where since 2017 SUBMON has worked with the trawling fishing sector in the Cap de Creus area and has established a close collaboration to conserve marine ecosystems and, especially the bottlenose dolphin population, and thus promote territorial development based on the promotion of natural and cultural values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In order to analyse how dolphins behave when they chase fishing nets and determine if and how they enter the nets to feed, an underwater camera system will be used to record the feeding behaviour of the bottlenose dolphin during fishing <strong>flights <\/strong>. The camera placement system will be worked on together with the collaboration of the brotherhoods of Llan\u00e7\u00e1 and Rosas and priority will be given to boats that operate at less than 200 meters, which is the area of presence of the dolphins. In turn, the SUBMON team will record standardized data on the surface behavior of the dolphins. This data will be analysed to establish patterns that are repeated and that can be related to the images captured by the cameras, thus associating behaviours on the surface with behaviours underwater.   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The project includes boat trips to study the presence and behaviour of dolphins in the waters of Cap de Creus during different times of the year (cold, warm and closed season) which will also determine the degree of dependence of the populations of these cetaceans on this type of fishing. During these periodic outings, data will be taken on species, position, group size, presence of offspring and behaviour and photographs will be taken to photo-identify the different individuals. These data will make it possible to determine the percentage of fishing association, the density of individuals and the distribution in the area of bottlenose dolphins in the area, as well as to determine if there are seasonal differences or in the presence and absence of trawler fishing vessels.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To carry out this study, the participation of the fishing sector in the study area has a fundamental role, and for this reason, this project has the collaboration of the brotherhoods of the area and from the beginning those trawlers who want to collaborate in the project will be involved. They will work together to design the study and determine both the best equipment and material to use, as well as the best time and place to install the cameras on the network. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Subsequently, the images obtained will be viewed together with the fishermen to review and compare with the recorded behavior and the associated fishing activity (area, catches, etc.).
