Thanks to their structural complexity, they create a suitable habitat and place of refuge, as well as ideal areas for feeding and reproduction for hundreds of marine species, many of which are of commercial interest. Being such rich and biodiverse areas, they are usually fishing grounds and consequently, sponges and corals are frequently accidentally caught by fishing. These catches have a negative effect on the structural and functional part of the ecosystem, leading to substantial desertification and impoverishment of all associated species.
