The project is based on the conservation of the lesser grey shrike (<\/span>Lanius minor<\/em>)), a species that is “critically endangered”, according to the Red Book of Vertebrates of Spain. It is estimated that today there are about eight specimens left in our territory. <\/span>

Through the actions of this project, it is intended to establish two ex situ breeding groups in two different locations, through the contribution of individuals born in captivity.<\/p>\n

The Lesser Shrike (Lanius minor<\/em>) is one of the most endangered passerine birds in the Iberian Peninsula. The ex situ conservation of this species has begun at the Centre for the Recovery of Native Fauna of Vallcalent (Lleida). <\/p>\n

Within the framework of this initiative of the Barcelona Zoo, with the support of the Department of the Environment and Habitat of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Biodiversity Foundation, some breeding pairs have been transferred from the Vallcalent Centre to the Zoological Park, to maintain the genetic reserve of this species of migratory bird that inhabits arid areas of Europe and Asia and spends its winters in southern Africa.<\/p>\n
