Improvement of biodiversity through landscape restoration (hydromorphological) and participatory actions in the environment of the Huerva River (BI-RE-PAPAH).

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The general objective of the project is to restore two urban sections of the Huerva River as it passes through Zaragoza and the landscaped areas near them, to improve the longitudinal continuity of the ecological corridors (Huerva, Ebro and Gállego) of the city, in order to create ideal habitat conditions for the biodiversity associated with these corridors. These actions, together with the improvement of accessibility to these spaces, are intended to provide the citizens of Zaragoza with spaces for dispersion and leisure in which they can connect with nature. Some of the actions used to renaturalize the river ecosystem and the surrounding landscaped areas correspond to Nature-based solutions. These actions are also intended to make the natural areas of the city of Zaragoza more adapted to climate change.

BI-RE-PAPAH focuses on river and landscape restoration actions that will favor the natural processes of the Huerva River, favoring the conservation and development of biodiversity in urban environments, adapting these spaces to universal accessibility and guaranteeing public safety. It is planned to renaturalize two stretches of river and surrounding areas, which are currently very degraded, improving their ecological condition and their capacity to provide ecosystem services. The actions will contribute to pollution prevention and control, reducing diffuse pollution. The widening of the channel will improve drainage capacity and mitigate the risk of flooding. The restoration of the riparian structure will facilitate the adaptation of the river environment to climate change. The actions are based on a circular economy approach and a balanced distribution between men and women at all stages of the project.
