This area develops projects for the conservation and restoration of habitats, species and ecosystems, with a great focus on the marine environment. It also promotes and manages projects and initiatives related to land stewardship, the conservation of endangered species or the promotion of lifestyles that respect nature.

It also participates in the development of Plans, Strategies and tools for biodiversity management.
With this focus, it prepares and develops projects financed with EU funds, with funds from the European Union's LIFE programme predominating in its activity.

In charge of the management of calls for grants aimed at generating knowledge in strategic areas such as terrestrial, marine and coastal biodiversity and one of its main drivers of loss, climate change, where funds are channelled to the environmental and academic sectors.

Likewise, and in close collaboration with the Spanish Office for Climate Change and thanks to the PIMA Adapta (Plan for the Promotion of the Environment for Adaptation to Climate Change), actions are promoted to support the achievement of the objectives of the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change and their respective work programmes.

It organises actions aimed at promoting the transformation and resilience of urban environments through projects for the conservation and recovery of urban and river biodiversity, mainly through nature-based solutions, thus improving the quality of life and habitability of cities.

It also generates and brings together knowledge in this area, highlighting the value of urban renaturation and its multiple benefits.
With this objective, calls for grants and projects are designed and implemented for local entities and other actors in the urban ecosystem committed to the sustainable transformation of Spanish cities.

It coordinates the line of work for the promotion of the bioeconomy, especially through calls for grants for projects that promote an economy that respects planetary boundaries and benefits biodiversity, and that promotes the sustainable use of natural resources as a driver of development, achieving impact transformations in line with the conservation and restoration of natural heritage.

In addition, it monitors the projects that benefit from aid, the justification and settlement of the projects, as well as other projects and initiatives of its own.

This area aims to promote more sustainable economic models, from the conviction of the role that the circular economy must play in the ecological transition and in halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity.
It manages calls for grants to promote the circular economy in Spain associated with the funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Its tasks include the monitoring of projects benefiting from aid, their justification and settlement. The area is committed to supporting companies willing to adopt circular principles that generate value through the development of innovative solutions that can lead to systemic changes.

This area aims, on the one hand, to conserve the marine environment together with the fisheries and aquaculture sector and promotes sustainable fisheries and aquaculture through the Pleamar Programme, financed by the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture.

On the other hand, it manages the calls for aid from the European Social Fund Plus through the Empleaverde+ Programme, and the Emprendeverde Network, which facilitate access to training and allow people, both unemployed and working and entrepreneurs, to face the changes that occur in the labour market with greater confidence.

In the same way, it manages the project of the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory (OESA).

Finally, it manages the participation of the Biodiversity Foundation in the European Biodiversity Partnership, Biodiversa+, a global and multidisciplinary platform in which 74 entities from 36 countries participate.
