Rainwater collection actions in Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores and Los Nietos by means of SUDs and conditioning of Rambla de la Carrasquilla in the Mar Menor area (SUDSMC).

MITECO

  • The project aims to mitigate the impact of surface runoff of water from agricultural use with high concentrations of fertilizers and phytosanitary products that are eventually discharged into the Mar Menor. At the same time, it is intended to provide a solution to the flooding problems generated during the increasingly frequent episodes of torrential rains.
  • To this end, different sustainable urban drainage systems will be implemented and the surface of park areas will be waterproofed to prevent the infiltration of pollutants into the soil and natural ecosystems, adding renaturalized areas with aquatic plants.
  • To increase the effectiveness of the proposed solutions, plant structures will be implemented as a conservation barrier on agricultural farms; green corridors will be established next to the wadi and a pilot plant with barley will be created to test the barrier effect of the green filters against possible floods caused by torrential rains.

The overall objective is to reduce and/or eliminate the input of agrochemicals and organic nutrients to the Mar Menor, while reducing runoff erosion and protecting the soil. This will improve the environment and biodiversity in the agricultural area by generating meadows that can incorporate experimental crops and maintain auxiliary fauna.

Specific objectives include:

  • Increase the storage and drainage capacity of rainwater, capturing and redirecting runoff lines, laminating and controlling flows.
  • Minimize contamination of suspended solids, nutrients and agrochemicals through green filter surfaces with native species.
  • Create different wetland, forest and grassland ecosystems to provide refuge for biodiversity.
  • Improve the landscape and create green spaces for the use and enjoyment of citizens.
  • Decrease the inputs of phytosanitary products and fertilizers to the Mar Menor from agricultural activities, increasing the environmental sustainability of the sector.
  • Increasing the green filter surface, wetlands with the planting of vegetation cover and landscaping intervention through the planting of trees and shrub species that will improve biodiversity and enhance the regeneration of natural areas as potential habitat for wildlife.
  • Implementation of hygrophytic plant species with increased filtering capacity to achieve a reduction of nitrates, nutrients and agrochemicals in the water returning to the Mar Menor. The captured and filtered flows will be used for water quality control of the established green filters.
  • Acquisition and installation of equipment for overflow detection, rainfall measurement and flow quantification.
