Methodology for industrial sector risk assessment and adaptation to climate change in the estuarine environment (MyEst)

MITECO

  • This project aims to assess the risks associated with climate change in the industrial sector that operates in the estuarine environment, whose production processes and facilities are compromised by variations in the environmental conditions of the water they take from the surrounding area.
  • To this end, tools capable of predicting the complex behavior of estuaries, systems where coastal and fluvial dynamics interact, will be available.
  • The transfer of information will strengthen the capacities of this industrial-entrepreneurial fabric to improve its climate resilience.

The general objective of this project is to develop a methodology for risk assessment of the industrial sector in the estuarine environment that will in turn allow the development of a methodology for the integration of measures for adaptation to climate change. This pilot project focuses on the chemical industry located in the estuary of the San Martín de la Arena estuary (Cantabria).

Among its specific goals are:

  • Analyze existing methodologies and environmental databases, as well as the thresholds of the target indicators that affect the selected industrial processes.
  • Set up a numerical process model by calibration and validation for high-resolution simulation of target variables in the pilot estuary.
  • Establish a hybrid methodology based on statistical and dynamic downscaling techniques for risk assessment under any computationally feasible climate change scenario.
  • Establish an optimization methodology for the establishment of dynamic adaptation measures.
  • Transfer, exchange and communicate information and results to managers and competent authorities.
  • Literature review, review of available databases and determination of potential thresholds for target indicators.
  • Development of a platform for data integration and climate projections: MyEst Data-Hub.
  • Conducting field monitoring campaigns using different types of sensors to characterize the pilot project estuary with in situ measurements.
  • Configuration of a validated numerical model for the generation of databases with high resolution results.
  • Development of a hybrid methodology for risk assessment.
  • Development of an optimized methodology for the establishment of dynamic adaptation measures.
  • Development of a prototype application for visualization of results: MyEst Dash APP.
  • Dissemination and communication of the project.
