This project is based on three basic assumptions: (1) recent scientific and technical advances have shaped new models of forest management that, however, have not yet been transferred to forestry practice in a significant way; (2) the co-generation of knowledge among all stakeholders, experts and users, and the participatory evaluation of solutions encourages the integration of objectives and the adoption of innovation; and (3) the landscape is essential and structural in decision making, in the definition of objectives and actions, and in the evaluation of impacts.
This project will develop activities to promote multifunctionality, biodiversity and forest bioeconomy within the framework of a novel application of the living laboratory concept. A demonstrative living laboratory (combining the concepts of living-lab and ligthhouse) will be established at landscape scale, considering the characteristic mosaic of the Mediterranean landscape, in a model area that represents well the joint challenge of rural depopulation, conservation of protected areas and a high risk of forest fires. This living laboratory will be egalitarian and will design, implement, evaluate and disseminate actions for the conservation and promotion of the biological and functional diversity of the forest landscape, as well as strategies for the exploitation and diversification of forest uses, and will link its activity to an ambitious local training program aimed at social and environmental sustainability in the medium and long term.
The main objective is to test, demonstrate and promote a model for the promotion of forest multifunctionality, biodiversity and bioeconomy based on the participatory generation, planning and evaluation of novel and scientifically sound actions, integrating the perspectives of stakeholders and experts.
It is expected to demonstrate the potential of new decision-making and forest management models for achieving the objectives of sustainable use of resources, protection of biodiversity and promotion of the role of the forest territory as an engine for development. Finally, a replication and transfer plan of the approach and actions will be analyzed and mapped for all the forestry municipalities of the Levante Peninsular.
