The Water Framework Directive establishes, at the community level, the objective of conserving and recovering the good condition of our rivers. Spain, as a member state of the European Union, developed the National River Restoration Strategy (NRSR), which proposes to achieve good ecological status through the management of river systems, recognizing the importance of citizen participation and involving social groups.

Based on the ENRR, the project addresses, through river stewardship, the conservation and rehabilitation of riparian ecosystems of representative typologies in an Iberian context to increase their resilience to climate change (e.g. by reducing the water footprint, restoring carbon sinks, etc.) and improving the provision of ecosystem services (e.g. through the provision and purification of water resources, nutrient regulation, sediment transport, physical flood protection, recreational activities, etc.).

Fluviatilis is a project for the ecological restoration of riverside ecosystems through river stewardship, with direct actions to remove invasive exotic species and replace them with native species that form riparian habitats, complemented by training and ecotourism actions. The restoration actions are complemented by the creation and dissemination of a River Restoration Guide through Land Stewardship, the generation of interpretive routes, ecotourism packages and CSR models, as well as the creation of nurseries of native riverside species and training actions (biodiversity and river ecosystems, nature guide, environmental management and river sampling techniques, nursery and gardening, river restoration for people with disabilities and control of ERA), which will contribute to the employability of the areas of action.

It is planned to restore 37 ha of riparian forest through the ratification of 19 stewardship agreements and the formalization of 13 new agreements, and the planting of more than 650 hydrophytic plants and 450 heliophytes; all this accompanied by the creation of 8 routes (140 users) and 3 tourist packages (100 users), the implementation of 10 training courses (70 participants), the production of 35,000 seedlings in the nurseries and the formalization of 1 CSR agreement for the promotion, development and expansion of the project.
