GUITAR-HERO: Habitat, distribution and mobility of GUITARra fish and other coastal Elasmobranchs

Pleamar program

Common guitars (R. rhinobatos) and other elasmobranch species face the threat of extinction in the western Mediterranean. In this context, the recently declared ISRA (Important Sharks and Rays Area) by the IUCN in waters off the coast of Murcia (ISRA Murcia Eastern Coast) is a critical bastion for the future of these species. With this project it is proposed to obtain critical biological, ecological and fishing information of the common guitar and other species in the area through a multidisciplinary approach, including visual censuses with an autonomous diving suit (visu and stereocamera), community science, data mining from social networks and forums, mobility studies (acoustic telemetry) and identification of their optimal habitat and potential distribution. In addition, it is proposed to lay the foundations for a captive keeping system for some elasmobranch species and a management and conservation plan for the species included in the study.

The project seeks to deepen the knowledge (both scientific and of society as a whole) of the biology, ecology and fishery of guitarfish (O. Rhinopristiformes) and other coastal elasmobranchs of the Iberian SE (Murcia), promote awareness and participation of society in their conservation and lay the foundations for their effective management.
