Until very recently they have been considered as great unknowns since no exploration work had been carried out. Today, the seamounts of the Ibiza Channel, which researchers have called Nao Mound and Morrot de Formentera, are already considered two habitats of great ecological value, thanks to the work of Oceana.
The entity, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation, has carried out a project that has made it possible to film images of these two elevations, distributed between the Balearic Islands and the coast of the Community of Valencia. After the filming process, all the data obtained have been processed to be included in the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.
In this way, it has been possible to learn very interesting data such as the existence of crustaceans of commercial importance or the gardens of deep gorgonians in the mountain of Nao Mound, as well as a high number of fish and cold-water coral reefs in Morrot de Formentera. which is part of the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species, and which will require protection and preservation measures.
All the images of fauna and flora collected by Oceana can be seen thanks to an interactive 3D tool that includes virtual flight, Google Earth navigation, video and photo captures and a list of species and habitats filmed in these two mountains. It can be consulted by clicking here.
