On the sidelines of the 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Hyderabad, India, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has presented the list of the 25 primates at risk of extinction in a new report “Primates in Danger: The World’s 25 Most Endangered Primates, 2012-2014”.
The list includes five endangered species in continental Africa, such as the eastern plains gorilla (Democratic Republic of Congo), the cercopithecus roloway (Ghana and Ivory Coast) or the Rondo galaga (Tanzania), six in Madagascar, nine Asian species and five from South America, such as the brown howler monkey and the kaapori capuchin monkey in Brazil or the marmoset of the Mayo River in Peru.
The report, produced in collaboration with Conservation International (CI) and the Bristol Foundation for Conservation and Science (BCSF), points to the need for new conservation measures for these species, which have been reduced by the destruction of tropical forests, trade and illegal hunting.
