Proyecto Ríos is an initiative of Associació Hàbitats that was born with the aim of involving society in the conservation of river ecosystems.
To do this, it uses tools such as volunteering, education and participation.
It is the largest environmental volunteering initiative in Catalonia and, since 1997, it has been mobilising thousands of volunteers to analyse and guard a stretch of river.
Volunteering is organised into groups that act at different points of the Catalan hydrographic network whose mission is to analyse and monitor the assigned stretch of river.
With the set of data obtained, the RiusCat Report is prepared, a unique document that summarises the ecological status of the hydrographic network of Catalonia and recognises the civic work of volunteers.
This document is of great value, on the one hand, due to the importance of the data collected and, on the other, due to the participation of an average of 3,200 volunteers per year, in 175 inspection points in Catalonia and some 88 km of river guarded.
The general objective of the project is to involve citizens in the knowledge, monitoring and conservation of river ecosystems through education and volunteering.
