Manual for the self-diagnosis of risks and the integration of adaptation to climate change in the food industry and application of self-diagnoses through the development of pilot projects in companies in the Spanish east (Adapta Industria)

MITECO

Through this project, the Association of Food Industry Companies of Murcia, Alicante and Albacete (AGRUPAL) aims to develop a manual for self-diagnosis of risks and the integration of adaptation to climate change in the food industry. In addition, they apply the methodologies and tools established in pilot projects in companies in the Spanish east and develop training, awareness-raising and experience exchange activities.

According to AGRUPAL, the agri-food sector is aware of the need to assess the risks and opportunities for adaptation in relation to its facilities, supply chain and value.
Therefore, a self-diagnosis manual, the result of a previous study and technical seminars to discuss criteria for defining vulnerability and a catalogue of measures and success stories, will allow companies to deal with adaptation.
Pilot projects will be carried out that will include training on the use of the tool.
Knowledge, experiences and case studies will be disseminated in a virtual space for the exchange of ideas.
Different awareness-raising actions will facilitate the integration of adaptation in the business environment and in the drafting of works projects.

The main objective of the project is to develop a manual for self-diagnosis of risks and the integration of adaptation to climate change in the food industry, through the selection of methodologies and successful experiences discussed in the framework of technical seminars, their application through pilot projects in companies in the Spanish east and the development of training activities and exchange of experiences and awareness.

Specific goals include:

  • Develop tools and methodologies for the self-diagnosis of risks and the integration of adaptation to climate change, oriented to the food industry and train for their use.
  • Develop pilot projects using the self-diagnosis methodology aimed at managing the risks arising from climate change.
  • Disseminate information on adaptation case studies carried out by industry and raise awareness of adaptation mainstreaming.
  • Preparation of an initial dossier of knowledge including the current context of climate change.
Selection of useful information for companies on climate change and the challenge of adaptation to the impacts of climate change and climate-related policies.
  • Development of technical seminars to discuss the proposed methodologies in relation to the business and geographical reality through the participation of experts and companies.
Their function is to complement the initial dossier with advanced thematic contributions that will be moderated and energized by two “expert rapporteurs on climate change”.
  • Drafting of the methodological manual for the self-diagnosis of climate risks and the integration of adaptation to climate change in the facilities and supply and value chain of the food industry, with special reference to the food industry in the regions of the Spanish Levante.
  • Extension of the strengthening of technical capacities for the application of self-diagnoses, through training through two courses, one face-to-face at the regional level (Spanish East) and online (national).
  • Application of self-diagnoses through pilot projects in food companies in eastern Spain.
The pilot projects will be developed through face-to-face meetings with personalised attention to each selected company, individually or in small groups.
  • Creation of the “Adapta Industria” Campus: a virtual space for the dissemination of practical cases of adaptation and exchange of ideas.
  • Design and development of awareness-raising actions to facilitate the integration of climate change adaptation in the business world aimed at senior managers and integrate adaptation into work plans and projects aimed at the group of engineers who draft projects.
  • Estimation of the adaptations and changes that will be generated in the sector thanks to the commitments achieved in the project and the diagnosis generated.
  • Development of actions to present and disseminate the project and its results.
