The Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, has met with his counterparts from the European Union to analyse the common position on the final document that will come out of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development “Rio+20”, in which he is participating these days in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
At the meeting held under the Danish presidency and with the presence of the European Commissioner for the Summit, Janez Potocnik, Arias Cañete and the rest of the ministers shared their points of view to agree on the final text of the Summit, of which Arias Cañete has advanced an initial assessment before it is signed: “Important things have been achieved, and the text will reflect these aspects that we should not disdain; it would be a mistake to leave here with a pessimistic message,” the Minister advanced.
Arias Cañete, who spoke first to his counterparts at this meeting proposing to give a joint message, proposed to the rest of the EU representatives that the next informal Council of Ministers in Cyprus, to be held in mid-July, should address the need for “all EU Member States to work to make the commitments reached at Rio+20 a reality”.
