The proposal to extend the Doñana Biosphere Reserve to the maritime area has been assessed by the Biodiversity Group of the Doñana Participation Council, with the aim of being addressed at the next plenary session of the Council, scheduled for December.

This is a proposal put forward by environmental organizations that points out the need to approve the expansion of the Reserve in an area with significant richness in species and seabeds, such as the Guadalquivir Fishing Reserve and the marine canyons, located at a depth of 2,500 meters.

This extension proposal is in addition to the one already raised by the Junta de Andalucía on the expansion of 14,000 hectares of public forest. The latter was presented three weeks after the expansion carried out by UNESCO, which went from 77,000 to 268,000 hectares, distributed in 14 municipalities in the provinces of Cádiz, Huelva and Seville.
