The Indemares-Avilés 0912 oceanographic campaign, developed by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), will begin next Monday, October 1, on board the new vessel “Ángeles Alvariño”.

The campaign, which aims to study the structure and dynamics of the deep ecosystems of the Avilés canyons, will carry out geomorphological study activities – including multibeam mapping and sediment sampling – of the continental shelf in its area near the head of the canyon, the estimation of the spatial distribution of bottom habitats and their environmental properties. as well as the quantity and spatial distribution of epibenthic communities of rocky habitats and cold-water coral reefs, and the dynamics and characteristics of the water mass in the canyon axes.

One of the main purposes of the LIFE+ INDEMARES project, the study of three-dimensional biogenic arrangements where vulnerable species established in European directives may be found, may be developed during this campaign.
