Sabadell has been distinguished by the European Union as an example of good practices in the fight against climate change for its “smart meter” program, launched in 2009.
Thanks to this energy saving and efficiency project, implemented from the initiative of the Covenant of Mayors of the European Commission, the city of Sabadell has managed to reduce electricity consumption by 20%. Likewise, the project proposes that 20% of energy production will come from renewable sources by 2020.
Smart meters make it possible to detect those moments of higher electricity consumption in homes, while identifying certain potential improvements to implement more efficient consumption, measures with which consumption has been reduced by 12.5%, 119 kilowatts per inhabitant per year. In addition to reducing spending, the initiative proposes the reduction of CO2 emissions, promoting the active participation of citizens and directing the gaze towards responsible and sustainable consumption habits.
