In the 2009-2010 edition of the “Acció 21” Awards, the BioDiverCiudad project, promoted by the Jane Goodall Institute Spain and the Biodiversity Foundation, has been awarded for “the effectiveness and originality in achieving its objective of raising awareness of the existence and importance of biodiversity in the urban environment”. The Jury has pointed out that the initiative contributes to citizens adopting a lifestyle compatible with the conservation and recovery of an environment more balanced with the natural environment.
The innovative BioDiverCity programme, which also has the collaboration of Barcelona City Council, has been unanimously chosen from among 41 projects presented. Ferran Guallar, president of the Jane Goodall Institute Spain, collected the award.
BioDiverCiudad has carried out more than 200 public activities, since 2007, in the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Lleida. Thousands of citizens continue to enjoy the interesting practical activities of exploration of flora and fauna throughout the city called ecosafaris, workshops, biofiche (playful-didactic materials with printed and downloadable comics), a new national contest of eco-initiatives and a website with minipedia, video channel, blog and various resources (available in www.biodiverciudad.org).
BioDiverCiudad is a free program and is aimed at families, with special emphasis on students between 8 and 12 years old (middle and upper cycles of Primary Education).
