Presented a protocol to quantify GHG emissions in waste management

The FB has collaborated with the Association of Waste Management Companies and Special Resources (ASEGRE) in the translation and dissemination of the French protocol EpE Protocol, a tool for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Spanish waste management companies, in order to make it available to all Spanish companies in the sector so that they can quantify and inventory the emissions generated by their activity and implement the appropriate measures for its reduction.

The presentation of the protocol took place during the forum “Waste management: contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and their quantification”, in which national and international experts analysed how proper waste management, especially recycling and recovery, contributes to reducing GHG emissions in the European Union.

Those attending the forum, mainly representatives of the regional administrations, waste management companies and organisations and entities linked to the sector at the national level, have received a copy of the protocol in digital format, which can also be downloaded free of charge from the ASEGRE website by any company or entity after filling out a form.

In addition to disseminating and promoting the protocol, with the holding of the forum “Waste management: contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and their quantification”, it is intended to provide an instrument for the fulfilment of the objectives set in the Spanish Strategy for Climate Change and Clean Energy, Horizon 2007-2012-2020 and the National Integrated Waste Plan.

The Spanish Strategy for Climate Change and Clean Energy contemplates the reduction of GHG emissions from the waste sector, the optimisation of energy efficiency in management processes, their treatment and recovery, as well as the priority promotion of their reduction and the use of the materials contained therein. as well as biomethanization and recovery of biogas in landfills.

This project also aims to promote recycling and proper waste management, reducing the carbon footprint of this type of activity, and thus contributing to sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
