The Biodiversity Foundation supports this initiative that contributes to raising awareness among the population about the importance of fighting climate change. The goal is to reach 30,000 participants, 7 million kilometers of Greenways traveled and a saving of 930 tons of CO2.

“Greenways, Zero CO2” is the name of the campaign that has just been launched by the Spanish Railways Foundation (FFE), with the support of the FB, to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of fighting climate change, preserving biodiversity, reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable mobility habits through the use of Greenways.

The campaign is ongoing and will continue until October 2011. Among the planned activities is the creation, maintenance and dissemination of the online tool “Greenways, Zero CO2” in www.viasverdes.com. In addition, an intense campaign in the media is being prepared, as well as a citizen involvement campaign, in which meetings, excursions, and various public and open events will be promoted.

The aim is to promote and increase the number of journeys through Greenways, making citizens aware that, with this, they contribute to the saving of greenhouse gas emissions. In short, choose the Greenways over other alternatives for daily travel, leisure and tourism that are polluting if carried out in motorised means.

Specifically, citizens are encouraged to travel the Greenways and quantify the amount of CO2 they have stopped emitting when walking, cycling or rollerblading along these routes. To do this, they must include the kilometres travelled on the greenways in the CO2 emissions savings calculator (designed by ECODES), which is available on the FFE website.

Ferrovial is also collaborating in this campaign, as well as numerous institutions, environmental and citizen associations, as well as the managing bodies of some Greenways.
