The meeting is part of the project Guitiriz: the sense of water, which the University of Santiago is currently developing in the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve with the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation to spread the culture of business sustainability among the rural population of the area.

The Biodiversity Foundation (FB) participates in the congress Biosphere Reserves as a territorial sustainability strategy, which is being held between Friday 3 and Saturday 4, at the Lugo campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

The main objective of this Congress is to serve as a meeting space for the exchange of knowledge on the management of these protected natural areas. Biosphere Reserves are pilot areas for the promotion of policies linked to sustainable rural development and, therefore, in this forum the experiences that have managed to successfully reconcile human activity in the territory with the preservation of biodiversity and natural resources will be presented.

This weekend’s forum is part of the project Guitiriz: the sense of water, carried out by the University of Santiago de Compostela, in the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve, with the support of the FB, through the Empleaverde Program. This initiative aims to disseminate the culture of business sustainability, promoting activities aimed at workers in the municipalities located in this Reserve, promoting employment alternatives and economic initiatives associated with the sustainable use of the natural resources of the area, especially water, among the rural population.

The Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve integrates various mountain and river habitats, a population of about 160,000 inhabitants and a rich historical and cultural heritage. The Reserve includes the Parga-Ladra-Támoga river complex, declared a Site of Community Importance (SCI), as well as other less important protected areas, such as small wetlands and lakes.
