The Ministry of the Environment has shown its support for animal protection associations that promote ending the mistreatment of greyhounds, a practice that is still common in some areas of our country.
This has been expressed by the Undersecretary of the Department, Concepción Toquero, to the president of the Federation of Animal Protection Associations, Cristina García Moreno, who has delivered 50,000 signatures of people who reject the brutal practices that are maintained in Spain to kill greyhounds that are no longer useful for hunting.
This position has already been expressed by the Minister of the Environment, Cristina Narbona, to the organizations that defend animal welfare in the meetings she has had with them since the beginning of the legislature.
The Federation, which is made up of more than 20 associations from all over Spain, has gathered these signatures in a record time of five months. The representatives of this group have come to the Ministry with a group of greyhounds saved from death and abuse, with the aim of demonstrating to society the cruelty with which these dogs are treated.
The Ministry of the Environment, although it does not have specific competences on the mistreatment of animals, has committed to transferring this problem to the Autonomous Communities and has included it in the agenda of the next Sectoral Conference.
It is also planned that the Ministry will organize an exhibition with graphic material on the mistreatment of greyhounds, to raise awareness in society about this dramatic situation.
