The general director of Water, Jaime Palop, has said that the water situation in Spain is “delicate, but not chaotic, it is not uncontrolled”, and that the hydrographic confederations of the southern half are preparing “strategic plans” in case the spring becomes dry again.

Palop has given a press conference together with the newly appointed president of the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation, Enrique Calleja, and has said that the Ministry is aware of the possible winter and spring rains because, if there are months of drought again, “we could have problems even for the consumption of mouths”.

He explained that he has entrusted these strategic plans to the confederations of the Guadiana, Tagus, Guadalquivir, Júcar and Segura basins, because they are the most affected by the scarcity of resources. We are facing a multi-year drought,” he said, so his department is taking “prevention measures” in the southern half of the peninsula.

2005 was the driest year of the last 125, despite which there was no lack of public supply, but while the month of October has been wet and November normal in terms of rainfall, December and January, on the other hand, are once again considered dry, and in the last 12 years the average rainfall is 30 percent below normal.
