The Director General of Environmental Quality and Assessment and the Natural Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, Javier Cachón, presided over the closing ceremony of the XVII Ecovidrio Journalism Awards, held in Madrid. These awards have recognized the environmentalist and primatologist Jane Goodall as “Environmental Personality of the Year 2016” for her work in favor of the protection and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Subsequently, the general manager congratulated Ecovidrio for its work and the award-winning media for their work “in the necessary social awareness of the need to protect the environment and, in particular, on the proper management of glass packaging waste”.

Javier Cachón recalled that, within the framework of the 2020 Strategy, the so-called Roadmap towards a Resource-Efficient Europe “includes the objectives and means to transform the current economy, based on the intensive use of resources, into a new growth model based on the efficient use of these resources, a transformation that must be accompanied by very important changes in different areas”.

The Director General stressed that The citizen plays a primary role, since “in the field of waste, the circular economy focuses on the prevention and efficient use of the resources contained in waste whose generation has not been avoided, so that citizens can consume responsibly by reducing the generation of waste and can contribute to the correct management of the waste they generate, as he is in charge of separating them and depositing them in the appropriate containers”.
