Raising awareness among the population about the values of marine and coastal biodiversity from a solidarity perspective is the purpose of an initiative of the IAIA Solidarity Work Association, a non-profit entity, which organizes and coordinates activities with solidarity purposes, mainly aimed at the elderly.
IAIA has launched the project “Weaving seas of solidarity” with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment. A project whose actions are aimed at raising awareness in society about the importance of conserving and protecting the oceans, with a view to June 8, World Oceans Day.
During the months prior to this celebration, blue squares of wool will be woven in senior centers, with the help of young volunteers, which will then be joined together to form an ocean-blanket that will be exhibited on the occasion of World Oceans Day. In addition, species of flora and fauna protected by the Habitats Directive will be woven in wool.
After the celebration, the ocean-blanket will be dismantled and divided into various blankets that will be sent to people without resources, especially those who live on the street, while the woven animals will be donated to an institution for educational purposes.
The project will thus involve both the elderly and young people and the population without resources, so it will reach different groups. All with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of preserving our oceans within the framework of solidarity action.
