Within the framework of the LIFE SHARA project, a conference is held on impacts and adaptation to climate change in the insurance sector in Spain, identified by the PNACC (National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change) as a sector that is particularly vulnerable to climate change.
The aim of this seminar is to obtain an up-to-date view of the relationship between extreme weather events and climate change in Spain from the perspective of scientific knowledge; to identify the existing challenges, possible solutions and opportunities that arise for the insurance sector and, finally, as a cross-cutting objective, to raise awareness of the risks associated with climate change and their influence on the different economic sectors. All this is aimed at helping this sector to better adapt to climate change.
This seminar brings together a wide range of actors. From scientific researchers to technicians from the Insurance Compensation Consortium and the State Agricultural Insurance Entity, including experts belonging to companies in the insurance sector and social actors interested in climate-related events.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA), through the Biodiversity Foundation, the Spanish Office for Climate Change, the State Meteorological Agency and the Autonomous Agency of National Parks and the Portuguese Environment Agency , launched the LIFE-SHARA project (Sharing Awareness and Governance of Adaptation to Climate Change in Spain), co-funded by the European LIFE programme, whose main objective is to collaborate in adapting to the impacts of climate change, cooperating with all the actors involved, generating technical knowledge and increasing social awareness.
The director of the Biodiversity Foundation of MAPAMA, Sonia Castañeda, the director of the National Center for Environmental Education (CENEAM) of the Autonomous Organization of National Parks (OAPN), Javier Pantoja, and the head of service of the Area of Adaptation Strategies of the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC), Aída Velasco, have inaugurated this seminar in Valsaín (Segovia), entitled “Impacts and adaptation to climate change in the insurance sector”, which takes place today and tomorrow.
Two presentations were given today: one on the scientific knowledge of extreme events associated with climate change in Spain, and the other on the perspectives from the insurance sector in relation to the evolution of damages associated with extreme events and the problem of insurability. In tomorrow’s session, group work will continue and a final panel on innovative experiences will take place.
