Individuals, associations or companies that have developed initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the need to preserve the marine environment and promote actions to combat pollution in the seas are valued.
The LIFE INTEMARES project, coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, has been awarded the Maritime Rescue Award for the best contribution to SDG 14 for the conservation of our seas.
In this edition of the awards, Salvamento Marítimo , an agency attached to the Ministry of Public Works, in its contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, has incorporated SDG14, focused on the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans.
This award highlights the people, associations and companies that have developed initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the need to preserve the marine environment and promote actions to combat pollution in the seas.
The LIFE IP INTEMARES project carries out a wide programme of actions linked to marine conservation, research, surveillance and monitoring of habitats and species. It also integrates in its actions, different actions in terms of governance and training, as well as communication, awareness and marine environmental education.
Our contribution to SDG14: Marine Life
The declaration of new marine protected areas is one of the lines of action of LIFE INTEMARES in which we continue to advance, placing Spain at the forefront of marine conservation.
In this sense, thanks to the declaration of the Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor as a marine protected area, it has been possible to exceed 12% of marine protected waters, which makes it possible to comply with the commitments set by the UN Convention on Biodiversity and that of the project, which marked the protection of at least 10% before 2020.
Our actions include the preparation of management plans for marine Natura 2000 Network sites, oceanographic campaigns and the study of new technologies to improve the surveillance and monitoring of species and habitats in the marine Natura 2000 Network.
We continue to work on the conservation and protection of marine species and habitats of community interest, we promote actions to prevent and reduce marine pollution and we study the goods and services of marine ecosystems to move towards a sustainable management model for blue growth. In addition, we support sustainable initiatives within the fisheries sector through the Pleamar Programme, within the framework of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
Among our actions we focus on the assessment of noise pollution at sea and the measurement of its effects on marine biodiversity. Through these actions, LIFE INTEMARES continues to advance in the transition towards a new management model for marine protected areas.
