The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment supports an initiative on World Bicycle Day to promote sustainable urban mobility

The director of the Spanish Office for Climate Change of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, Valvanera Ulargui, said today that “our generation is experiencing a decisive moment in the fight against environmental deterioration. We must modify our development model towards a new low-carbon and climate-resilient model. From the Ministry we want to continue to involve Spanish society in the fight against climate change and insist on the need for its involvement to achieve a healthier environment”.

Statements during the presentation of the “Move #PorElClima” initiative, which launches from today the possibility of buying several models of electric and conventional bicycles with a significant discount, a promotion that will be in force for the next two months and that has the participation of BH, Ziklo Team and Transport&Environment.

This promotion, which aims to promote sustainable urban mobility, is part of the #PorElClima Community project, of which the Ministry is part and which aims to involve companies and citizens in the fight against climate change. For two months, and through theporelclima.es/muevete-en-bici website, a platform has been activated to promote sustainable urban mobility through a change of model, giving priority to the bicycle instead of other more polluting means of transport.

According to the WHO, air pollution causes 300,000 premature deaths a year in Europe and reduces the average life expectancy of Europeans by almost a year. The use of bicycles for an average journey of 10 kilometres a day would mean no more than 38 kg of CO2 per month.

COMMUNITYFOR CLIMATE

“Muévete #PorElClima” is an action launched by the #PorElClima Community, an initiative that promotes the construction of a community that brings together the actions of everyone to curb climate change and value the actions of companies, citizens, public administrations, NGOs, media, universities, etc.

LAW ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY TRANSITION

The last Climate Summit in Marrakech demonstrated the determination of the international community in the global fight against climate change and in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The results of COP22 show that the fight against climate change is an irreversible process.

In this context, with a clear international and European framework, Spain must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in diffuse sectors by 26% by 2030, and participate in the objectives of promoting renewable energies and energy efficiency. To this end, the Government is working, through an open and participatory process, on the drafting of a Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition, whose main objective is to facilitate Spain’s compliance with its international and European commitments on climate change and energy.
