Identifying the health and social welfare benefits of protected areas

MITECO

The objective of this project is to identify and publicize the benefits of protected areas on health and social welfare.

The objective of this project is to identify and publicize the benefits of protected areas on health and social welfare.

The project is part of the 2009-2013 Work Programme, promoted by EUROPARC-Spain. Specifically in axis 4, relating to social support through the demonstration of the benefits and services of protected areas.

It aims to identify and disseminate the benefits of protected areas on public health and social welfare, as well as to develop ideas on how to take advantage of the opportunities offered by synergies between the fields of health and conservation, through the holding of two seminars of experts at the national level, to which both public health professionals from different institutions and managers of protected areas will be summoned.

Awareness-raising and healthy exercise activities will be carried out in the field with diverse groups (athletes, people with disabilities, families, etc.).

Within the framework of the initiative, a document will be prepared whose objective is to promote a rapprochement between the health and environmental administrations of the State, which will include the uses of protected areas that promote public health, in order to increase opportunities and social support for the conservation of nature. It is also intended that the result of this work will provide initial guidelines for the management of these aspects in protected areas.
