The initiative seeks to promote the sustainable development of Spanish aquaculture on the Mediterranean coast, through the proposal to the managers of the activity and the producing sector of new tools in the form of sustainability indicators.

It is also intended that managers support decision-making and facilitate the management of cultivation facilities in Spain, specifically in the Mediterranean region.

The definition and implementation of sustainability indicators is a necessity for any sector when it comes to promoting its sustainable development, and it is up to all the agents involved to favour and promote this development. To this end, the promotion and adoption of these indicators at the social, economic and environmental levels is essential.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Visibility and implementation of sustainability indicators and the sustainability report of aquaculture in Spain and specifically in the Mediterranean region.
  • Support for the implementation of sustainability indicators in the Mediterranean.
  • Definition of the Spanish strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture activity.

  4. To carry out a summer course aimed at professionals in the sector, students, scientists and researchers and agents interested in aquaculture activity, focused on the aspects that affect the sustainability of Spanish and Mediterranean aquaculture.
  5. To publicly present the work carried out during the three years of the project, which represents a turning point to this first stage of the project and allows the disposition of Spanish aquaculture to be visible.
  6. Collaborate with the General Commission for the Mediterranean in seminars and working groups that aim to further deepen the implementation of sustainability indicators as a tool for achieving more sustainable aquaculture.
