Spanish inventory of marine angiosperm meadows

MITECO

The objective is to carry out the first inventory of the marine angiosperm meadows mapped and studied in all the autonomous communities of the Spanish State with a coastline, with a view to determining the current state of knowledge of their distribution, extension, state of conservation and trajectories.

The objective is to carry out the first inventory of the marine angiosperm meadows mapped and studied in all the autonomous communities of the Spanish State with a coastline, with a view to determining the current state of knowledge of their distribution, extension, state of conservation and trajectories.

All relevant information on its ecological status, changes over time, the threats it suffers and the management measures for its protection will also be collected.

The analysis of this information aims to provide a current and clear picture of the state of basic knowledge in this field in Spain, which serves as a tool to define the necessary actions to expand the available information, and at the same time guarantee the conservation of angiosperm meadows.

This work will be carried out through a collaborative and coordination effort between the entities and administrations responsible for generating information in this field. The final result will be the publication of the collective work “Electronic Atlas of the seagrass meadows of Spain”.

The specific objectives are:

  • Preparation of a national inventory of the meadows of the different species of marine angiosperms with a view to obtaining, for the first time, up-to-date and as reliable maps as possible of their distribution and a realistic estimate of their extent.
  • Determination and analysis of the current state of knowledge of the state of conservation of the habitat and its trends in each autonomous community, as well as its relationship with the main pressures and impacts suffered and threatened by its conservation status.
  • Development of comprehensive and useful tools for the dissemination and management of seagrass habitats in Spain, which promote the need to apply effective and urgent management measures for their conservation and monitoring.

In this same context, the main management measures developed to date by each autonomous community to protect seagrass meadows from the pressures they suffer and achieve their recovery will be described.

The project’s activities include the development of seagrass distribution maps. In addition, a global analysis of the current state and trends of seagrass meadows, their relationship with human activity and the management actions developed will be carried out.

Within the framework of the project, the “Electronic Atlas of the seagrass meadows of Spain” will be published, which will be disseminated through different media and will be presented at a conference.
