Pilot implementation for the performance of water audits in the meat processing sector

MITECO

The meat processing industry is located to a greater extent in rural environments.

The meat processing industry is located to a greater extent in rural environments.

This has a significant impact on natural resources, such as water and its availability for other uses.

The main objective of SOSTAGUA is to contribute to the qualitative and quantitative improvement of water use in processing companies in the meat sector located in the Ebro Valley. To this end, a methodology will be developed and validated for carrying out water efficiency audits in the production process of the meat sector.

Carrying out a water efficiency audit will subsequently allow each company to know the use it makes of water in each of the stages of production and the possibility of improving the use of this resource through a guide of good practices for the improvement of water management in compliance with the environmental objectives of the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC).

The project aims to provide knowledge and technical support to the meat industry aimed at reducing water consumption and increasing its efficiency in terms of water use and management.

The main recipients of this project are workers of SMEs that produce exclusively cured raw products (chorizo, sausage, ham, loin, etc.), presented in different formats and in different distribution channels.

The project will reach a total of 248 workers and will allow a diagnostic methodology to be obtained to know the water efficiency in the meat sector industries.
