The project was born with the aim of specifying on which fundamental areas of development efforts to combat the effects of climate change should be concentrated, achieving the protection of the most vulnerable populations.

The project was born with the aim of specifying on which fundamental areas of development efforts to combat the effects of climate change should be concentrated, achieving the protection of the most vulnerable populations.

The Climate Vulnerability Monitor (CVM) 2012 presents an analysis of how climate change is affecting societies in 184 countries, making it global in scope. To this end, the methodology of the Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2010 has been reviewed and updated, as well as its publication and distribution at an international level. The CVM is an initiative of DARA International, developed together with the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), an association of leaders of countries highly vulnerable to climate change.

National policies, development aid, humanitarian action and climate change adaptation policies respond adequately to the impact of this phenomenon on the population, particularly those most vulnerable to its negative impacts. The Climate Vulnerability Monitor is a useful tool for key decision-makers in decision-making on development aid, humanitarian action and climate adaptation policies to understand on which key areas of human development efforts to combat the impacts of climate change should be concentrated, in order to protect the population most at risk.

Once the project is concluded, these are the objectives achieved:

Revised and updated Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2010 methodology. Based on the methodology developed for the “Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2010: The State of the Climate Crisis”, the weaknesses found were identified based on the comments and suggestions for improvement received by the Advisory Panel and the Technical Committee during the development of the study in 2010. In addition, the progress of scientific research in the period since then led to a significant number of additional improvements.

Publication of the report “Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2012”. Because the aim of the project was to provide policymakers and technicians with a tool to help them prioritise actions, special attention was paid to making both texts and graphic elements easily understandable.

1,500 copies were published and distributed in English with the results of the study. The printing of the report took into account environmental standards by using FSC-certified paper. In order to facilitate the dissemination and recommendations of the report as much as possible, an executive summary has been prepared that includes the most outstanding elements of the “Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2012”. This executive summary has been translated into French and Spanish, and 250 copies have been printed in each of these languages.

Dissemination of the conclusions and recommendations of the “Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2012” report. On the one hand, electronic and other specific materials have been prepared for the media. It has been disseminated through a press conference and the website.

The global launch of the publication took place on September 26, 2012, at the Asia Society headquarters in New York, with the participation of high-level international figures. This presentation was streamed and all the information was published on the website of the Dara International Foundation.

In the weeks following the report’s publication, it was distributed to experts, key political actors, UN agencies, bodies related to the study of climate change and humanitarian organisations, reaching around 1,000 key leaders and practitioners around the world. The executive summaries were also disseminated.

The main objective of the initiative has been achieved thanks to the publication and wide international dissemination of the Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2012 report, which collects statistical information on 184 countries.
