The objective of the initiative was to sensitize and raise awareness about the impact of food transport on climate change to three audiences: citizens in general, certain civil society groups with the capacity to replicate and disseminate the campaign and managers with decision-making capacity.
The objective of the initiative was to sensitize and raise awareness about the impact of food transport on climate change to three audiences: citizens in general, certain civil society groups with the capacity to replicate and disseminate the campaign and managers with decision-making capacity.
The actions of the project have developed favourably. In the early stages of the initiative’s development, the different local groups of Friends of the Earth Spain – from the geographical areas of the initiative – met on two occasions to coordinate the actions they were going to carry out.
To raise public awareness, additional materials have been developed to those created in previous stages of the project. Thus, a presentation and a video have been made, in addition to the design of an advertising campaign on buses. A pamphlet has also been published on direct sales points on organic farms and a book for food workshops.
The different local groups have carried out a total of 27 awareness-raising activities in which 736 people have participated directly and 1,400 indirectly. Almost 2,290 leaflets or pamphlets have been distributed as part of these activities. In addition, these activities have been disseminated through posters, mailings, websites and social networks, as well as in the media.
Local groups have developed new material adapted to the target audience – teachers and school students, volunteers of the association, university students and farmers – such as games, surveys, etc. Within the dissemination and training work in schools, 62 workshops have been held in 13 schools, with the participation of a total of 1,370 children and 55 teachers. In these activities, 77 reports and 1,255 leaflets and pamphlets have been delivered.
To disseminate the results of the study and the possible alternatives among the media and political agents, Friends of the Earth Spain organised two events at the national level: a breakfast with journalists and a presentation event. To publicize this event, the corresponding information was included in the Friends of the Earth newsletter and disseminated on social networks.
On the other hand, at the International Congress of Agroecology and Ecological Agriculture, held at the University of Vigo in June 2012, an event was organized to present the reports.
